THE THEME
Strategic Leadership
in a Complex World:
Today’s economic and
business climate is facing a fundamental challenge. The paradigms
that provided reliable guidance in the past are rapidly being
replaced. The emergent paradigms--driven by, among other things,
accelerated technological innovation, shifting social ethics,
political instability and globalization--have profound implications
for the nature of work, organizations and management. Thus, it is
imperative that organizations--both public and private--possess the
leadership necessary to conceive and execute strategy for these
changing, complex times. The George Washington University’s Executive
MBA program equips professionals for these realities through an
integrated curriculum delivered by our very best faculty.
THE CORE
The curriculum of the
Executive MBA Program emphasizes a general management approach,
spanning the full range of MBA disciplines that must be mastered for
effective business leadership today. The courses build upon areas of
recognized excellence of the School of Business and Public Management.
The core subjects – Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting,
Marketing Management, Financial Concepts and Markets, Strategic
Management and Leadership, Managerial Economics, Operations
Management, Quantitative Analysis and Decision Making, Information
Technology, Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management are
interwoven with cases reflecting real-world management
decision-making.
ADVANCED TOPICS
Following an
integrative approach, instruction in the core disciplines is augmented
with coverage of fields of continuing and emerging importance in which
GW faculty play leading roles. These advanced topics may include
Business and Public Policy, International Business, Management of
Technology and Innovation, Legal Environment of Business, Mergers and
Acquisitions, Ethics and Corporate Governance, Controllership and
Financial Statement Analysis, Negotiations and Decision-support
systems. Electives are added to the program of study based on the
preferences of each Executive MBA class.
The sequencing of
courses is carefully planned to allow new topics to build upon prior
courses. Compared to a more randomly sequenced part-time MBA program,
the integrated, lockstep Executive MBA approach offers much more
efficient use of class time by instructors. The curriculum is
reviewed on an annual basis, allowing for course substitutions and the
introduction of new topics. This constant revision ensures that the
program remains at the cutting edge of executive education. At the
end of the program, students earn The George Washington University
Master of Business Administration degree.
